comment Suggestions for Dell server for small office (< 10 users) that supports VMWare or similar environment
that's quite the recommendation with very little known about the vague requirements mentioned so far as "lightly loaded."

not sure why, but this dam sight keeps re-numbering my steps, they should be reading 1,2,3,4; not 1,2,1,2....

comment what is reliable way of getting name of primary domain controller?
By PDC, do you mean the PDC Emulator role or, possibly, looking to figure out which DC is Global Catalog master/replica? And which versions of Windows? 2003, 2008, 2008R2??? On the command line, you can dump the roles with: netdom query /domain:<your NB domain name> fsmo

comment Resource usage of mapped drives versus network location shortcuts?
maybe true and if so that would prove my point that it's an app and not the network layer protocol itself.

comment Limit a database's max disk size and limit user total database size usage
I don't quite understand why you would want to do this at the DB level; maybe giving more insight of what you're doing would lead to a better design? Sounds like a design level question to me. So assuming you have a valid reason, I have to ask: what do you expect the app tier to do when the DB runs out of space?

comment Best way to segment traffic, Vlan or subnet
"IP subnets and broadcast / collision domains have nothing to do with each other in the general case." No, they most certainly do in the general case. Each subnet has a network number and an associated broadcast address. Apart from ARP, you have other broadcast packets. It would be wrong to make this statement not knowing if they have multicast traffic on their network. DHCP clients uses IP broadcasting to learn of DHCP servers.

comment User in passdb, but getpwnam() fails!
I began looking at Samba source code. I found this function: auth_serversupplied_info *result; const char *username = pdb_get_username(sampass); pwd = getpwnam_alloc(result, username) pwd evaluates to NULL even though username is valid. getpwnam_alloc allocates memory for result structure and fills it with the Unix UID, primary GID, etc... Everything I read says that this call uses NSS. I hope someone from Samba team who has knowledge of this than I can chime in.

no, oddly enough I can see the LDAP getting queried for the test user with the correct arguments and err=0 nentries=1 so I know LDAP is returning a result set.
