comment .htaccess doesn't redirect to www-prefixed page properly
As you've surmised, apache (maybe as a result of app issue, not gonna rule that out yet) are intercepting the 301 redirects and showing the default apache error message. Might want to paste up in pastebin a redacted version of the httpd.conf - and the rest of the .htaccess to see if there is another conflict there too.

Oh cool, then can't hurt to move the index file out of the way to 100% exclude it as part of the problem :)

The app may be ok, but may be also conflicting with the setup on this server. It sounds like your app is currently in production so I can see how 'disabling it' isn't ideal. For fun, you might add a query string to the end of the redirection as a flag to aid discovery - so /$1?nowww=1 or something similar.

Can you confirm that rewrite rules are working over all, too?

Appreciate that you kept the asker's character/number restriction in the regex, but might want to simplify to using [a-z0-9] and adding the "nocase / NC" directive

revised RewriteCond not working on Apache (but enabled)
adding tags for debian since the mechanisms used are unique to debian/ubuntu (a2enmod and so on)

comment apache/mod_rewrite not configured properly?
Ah, the subtlety of having it in a user subdirectory, missed that totally. Apologies also for not reading the question and confusing fuelphp with fuelcms (poor name choices).

comment Rewriting main domain to subdomain (mod_rewrite)
@Shane Madden - don't think it's a dupe myself. That linked q is very helpful, but since it doesn't cover this specific question I think it is useful in its own right.

comment How to use basic auth for single file in otherwise forbidden Apache directory?
The <Files ...> reference only takes a filename, not a path, btw.

Just want to confirm that this does work - I hope that mit will return and select this answer.
