Thanks! Is "server_name *;" an acceptable value? When we use custom domains, not subdomains. Then it's a perfect solution!

comment ntpd crashes without removing pid file
If I'd go with monit, talking directly to ntpd is fine, but I think it's prone to false-positive by nature and thus less reliable since it's based on UDP. To avoid "flapping" (rapid unnecessary restarting), I'd probably go with periodic restart, which is more predictable.
