comment High load average, low CPU usage - why?
I would also check the output of 'mpstat 1 5' to view the per-processor statistics and look at the "csw" and "syscl" columns. From your vmstat above it looks like you are doing quite a lot of system calls and context switches, which would seem to validate webtoe's suspicion that you have a lot of threads (Solaris calls them LWPs- LightWeight Processes) constantly harassing the CPU. None of them are doing very much when they are running but many are spending time waiting to run, hence the high load averages.

comment Solaris SMF kill service because child dies
SMF should still notice if ALL processes for a contract go away and restart the service at that point. This is what happens with Apache if the parent process croaks.

comment How does ZFS Block Level Deduplication fit with Variable Block Size?
A slight correction: for files less than recordsize, ZFS will write a single filesystem block of the exact size (or the compressed size if compression is on). De-duplication operates on these filesystem blocks which are of variable size.

comment How expensive is a hostname in htaccess? Other solutions possible?
Have you considered using authentication for these areas instead, since your audience for them is so limited?

comment How to change controller numbering/enumeration in Solaris 10?
This is old, but hints at what I'm thinking: lbl.gov/ITSD/CIS/faqs/UNIX_Faq/9.html ; which is, that now that c0* links are gone, maybe removing the links for the existing controller will cause everything to be re-enumerated. Substitute the names of your bus architecture and controller drivers (mine would be pcieb and mpt_sas, for example). This method involves more than just path_to_inst and /dev symlinks, so it seems more... dangerous. ;)

Yes. See the context list for the Include directive: httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/core.html#include

OK, so move that config into the main httpd.conf inside a <Directory> directive (or use an Include if you need to programmatically update the file) and set "AllowOverride None" from / on down. That will eliminate one source of slowness at least.

comment Getting ZFS per dataset IO statistics (or NFS per export IO statistics)
I've done something similar to this, but remember that fsstat operates at the VFS layer, so not all the IO you see here is actually going to/from your zpool. The VFS stats will include IO that is served from RAM cache as well. Additionally, ZFS reorders and coalesces quite a bit of IO, so when you compare fsstat to 'zpool iostat' you often see very different numbers.

comment Mount 'dd' backup via lofi
You're on the right track, but see jilliagre's comment below. This will have to be mounted on a SPARC system.
