comment Nginx - Getting high request time for some static files
As above, logs please. Also take a look at iostat to get IO usage/latency. Other useful stuff; what sort of disks are you using (local disks in RAID, SAN, SSDs, disk speed etc.), how big are the files? Is it happening to the same images all the time? maybe post a bit of your NGINX config too, otherwise most of our suggestions will be guesswork

@TomO'Connor gist.github.com/samarudge/ad356345ee01a0880259 is an example but it happens for any remote job with a GIT repo. Running the build on 'master' works fine

Oh, unless you talk to them on a Tuesday and you stand upside down on a bin, in which case you don't need to license it at all but you need to buy Larry a chocolate chip muffin </rant> (This may not be 100% accurate, please don't quote it in a licensing audit)

You're trying to license Oracle on VMWare? Good luck with that. Here's a fun game, contact a sales rep, give them your details and get them to give you a price. Then contact another rep and watch them give you a different price. You want high availability? Oh you need to license every CPU core the database could ever possibly exist for. I hate Oracle licensing =(

comment Debugging high inbound traffic
So it was mostly my own fault, I used to use a secondary DNS service from my ISP, I rebuilt my server and started using Route53 for DNS so didn't install a DNS server but forgot to disable the secondary DNS service. I guess yesterday it suddenly decided to start sending huge numbers of queries to my server asking it for DNS records for the domains registered with the secondary DNS service. As soon as I turned SDNS off traffic dropped down to normal levels.

Left nethogs open for 5 mins, it doesn't seem to show anything out of the ordinary imgur.com/sFeSW IP tables is logging lots of dropped DNS packets (gist.github.com/2417610) The two IP addresses are owned by my ISP which at least gives me a point of contact.

comment How much server memory do I need for a 2TB Database SQL Server?
How big is your working set going to be? How big will it be in 5 years? and how often do you want to upgrade your server?

comment Is DELL R510 a right setup for a backup server
What are your requirements? Are you read or write intensive? How much data? Snapshots? Mirroring? DR? Fiber? How many clients? Retention for backups? Why a SAN rather than tape? You should really include more information, backups can vary from a CD in your bottom drawer to encrypted tapes sent to secure storage facilities. We have no idea what your requirements are, what you care about and what your limitations are.

comment Nagios: Is it possible to have multiple IPs for a host?
@SvenW Should that not happen anyway? How do things use servers if they don't know where they are? You would probably need to update the IPs somewhere and using DNS is the most logical place.

Why not use hostnames?
