comment Has anyone migrated production machines from MySQL to MariaDB?
In case anyone wants to know, we did end up deploying Percona.

comment How would one go about sizing hardware and disk space for a nagios server installation?
Thanks; it seems processing load won't be much of an issue, but we're most likely going to be setting up a VM for this, which means that the disk space is dear. We have a DB server that we'll configure as the data store, but knowing the usage there will also be a factor.

That was an awesome typo. Thanks for the idiot check =)

comment Link bonding across multiple switches?
As stated in the question, it would be using active backup. The switching issue is this: if the switches are not connected, then all nodes would have to be using the nic connected to the same switch, and a failure of that nic would isolate it.

comment Is it possible to run gitolite on a FreeNAS server?
The whole idea is that freeNAS can handle the physical storage, and gitolite would manage revisioning and permissions.

Are you suggesting that gitolite be on a VM somewhere else on the network, and then set up its home directory on nfs or something similar?

Although Dtrace is native to Solaris, it has actually been ported to most of the *nixes now; not sure about CentOS specifically, but its available for most

What is the motivation for changing? Curiosity, or some other consideration?

I'm a FOSS guy, so the short answer is more closed and less community-supportive. I will restrain the more detailed/soap-boxy explanations for rant blogs and the like. =)

comment Performance & Security Factors of Symbolic Links
We use git for all of our SCM, and then the servers have a trigger that does a forced checkout of the current maint branch. We tag each of our releases, but the maint branch is always live. To update, I just push the repo to the live servers, with one command: git push live-servers

Have you considered using git for release management? I know this wasn't the point of the question, but we migrated from symlinks like this to git a while back, and it has been far easier to maintain.

Have you looked at PuTTygen? That can supposedly import keys--I don't run any windows though, so I'm afraid that's about all I know of.

comment NAT Reflection, or Split DNS?
The three letter issue doesn't really help, because what I need is private vs. public ips, dependent on whether the service is behind the same firewall as you, and therefore NATed. Since servers reside in three locations, there is the internet view, and three others. There is not currently a VPN in place, though I'm considering that as well.

comment Is it possible to make the VirtualBox host machine use dhcp on vboxnet0?
There were specific services already running that I wanted to drop into the test environment without all the setip. Thanks for the suggestions.
