What kind of mail server do you plan on running on the new host?

comment does a domain win 2003r2 domain server have to also be the dns & dhcp server
Actually, a DNS server is not strictly required either; it's possible to set up an AD domain that does not publish the SRV records and uses NetBIOS to locate domain controllers. Admittedly, this is a pathological case, but it is possible.

It's not strictly true that you must run a Windows DNS server to use a Windows machine as a domain controller; it's possible to configure a BIND DNS server to serve the records Active Directory requires.

comment Correct MySQL username/password, but getting Access Denied error when run from script
You may also be able to save it to a file and run cat <query_filename> | mysql .... I'm sorry I don't have any better solutions.

Ah, I see. I believe you can pipe that data into mysql, such as echo "select * from users;" | mysql -u username -ppassword database. That may work better from the command line.

comment Use git for multiple server configuration files
You could use something like this to export the contents of the git repository to the machines. Then each machine wouldn't have the repository on it, just the files in its branch. If you want to push changesets to the central remote from each machine, though, I know of no solution that has both a single repository and also permits you to set up access controls on various branches. Maybe you could do Subversion over http with .htaccess on the repo? I've no idea if that works.

Do you mean write permissions to /etc? Or to be able to commit to the repository? I'm afraid I don't understand where the problem comes from.

comment Finding the LVM root volume while in the Grub 0.95 CLI without access to the grub.conf file
Well, if you try to run root (hdX,X) within grub, it should tell you the filesystem type, which will be different for LVM than it is for standard partitions, so you can detect an LVM physical volume that way. However, that doesn't help with any of the rest of the LVM layers.
