I'm an Oracle certified Database Administrator

I've worked extensively with both Oracle and Postgres, in various roles from DBA to developer. I have a basic working experience with SQL Server and MySQL.

comment Mail deliverability rDNS best practice
What problems should I expect if I configure my mailserver/rDNS/spf to use example.com rather than mail.example.com? You have me a bit worried with "Your mail server should be configured to identify itself in the HELO command as mail.example.com, not example.com…"!

comment LVM dangers and caveats
Very helpful thanks, +1, but I'd like to make one point: saying "RHEL 6 uses 2.6.32" is a bit misleading "there is no one kernel version number that accurately represents the RHEL 6 kernel". Is it really the case that any release of RHEL6 has this issue? I suspect not, and I'd be very surprised if 6.4 does even though it is nominally also based on 2.6.32.

comment Kernel panic during rsync
I'm not quite sure what --delay-updates does but it isn't compatible with --inplace which I think I need to avoid doubling up storage requirements at the target end (some of the files being transferred are in the 100s of Gb)

Thanks for the suggestions I'm using OCFS2 (I should have mentioned that earlier, sorry) and atime (not noatime or relatime)

I don't think so but tbh I'm not sure how to find out.

Try killing the GUI completely and any automatic network management software, the see what happens on the commend line when you plug in. Perhaps post ifconfig before and after on gist?

are the iptables rejects getting logged (eg to /var/log/messages)? You might need kern.* /var/log/messages in /etc/rsyslog.conf as well as -j LOG --log-prefix "iptables denied: " --log-level 7 or something like that.

+1, thanks, write-endurance is my main concern. I am wondering if I should under-partition the array by, say, 4GB to improve endurance.
