comment Ubuntu 12.04, after reboot, ping but don't have any service up ( ssh / apache )
At first I thought the /var/lock thing was a possible error, but it looks like a known issue with rescue mode - answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rescue/+question/185645

What did you do between the last reboot, and this reboot (i.e. what got installed or changed)?

What's the real world problem you're trying to solve here? Please read this serverfault.com/faq#dontask which explains why I'm asking.

comment I've accidently removed sudo and yum from my linux server
I don't use Centos, that was the first link I found (which is why I didn't paste it as an answer), I think a section near the bottom tells you how to get Centos back on the box. But it might be easier to restore from your most recent backup.

Oh, and if you've removed sudo and don't know the root password or su isn't configured, you'll need to boot the image into maintenance mode somehow. You might just consider restoring from backup.

It's likely you typed 'sudo yum remove sudo yum remove php ....' - i.e. classic case of double pasting. Not sure I know how to get them back though.

comment Scan for connected, powered on computers on a network?
Some of the target machines aren't windows, so the Domain Controller option is probably not that useful.
