comment SSH Tunneling for Munin
To be sure I understand well: The autossh command is executed on the NAS, the ssh command is executed on the server, and the nmap command is executed on the NAS? Is the munin-node also on the server?

comment Applications not installing due to unmet dependencies
Try creating the folder /etc/php5/apache2 manually using mkdir -p /etc/php5/apache2 and execute apt-get -f install again. Have you removed this folder manually before removing the package libapache2-mod-php5? If you have removed the apache folders manually, you will probably have to repeat this operation until dpkg can cleanly remove the package.

comment how to map hostnames to IP addresses on a Linux system
It works only on the local machine. It is the job of a DNS server to make this mapping available to other computers.

comment How should I setup apatch for proper subdomain redirection
You have probably something wrong in the configuration of your virtualhosts for domain.com, dev.domain.com and mail.domain.com. I would suggest you to configure everything step by step: (1) Configure domain.com, dev.domain.com and mail.domain.com. When they are working -> (2) Configure the virtualhost for development.domain.com and check that the redirection to dev.domain.com is working, and that domain.com, mail.domain.com and dev.domain.com are still working. (3) Configure email.domain.com and check again that everything is still OK. (4) Configure www.domain.com and *.domain.com
