comment Send input to background process
Are the only commands that you're trying to send shutdown or restart commands? Are you trying to run this as a daemon rather than just a process within your shell session?

comment How to add a timestamp to bash script log?
That will only add the timestamp once per execution of script.sh. The OP needs a timestamp per line.

comment How can I replace email alerts for system events with something more scalable?
In my case this would not work. The services aren't accessible outside the internal network and some of the alerts come from scripts running via cron so there's no daemon to check.

comment How can I make an EC2 instance report a custom hostname
Also, please edit the title. I'd edit it to be something like "How can I make an EC2 instance report a custom hostname?" but I'm not certain that's what you were asking.

comment How can I copy a LVM logical volume to a loopback file on another system?
It turned out that my issue was due to the LV being a Xen disk image however this would be the preferred method of copying an LV to a disk image file.

comment How can I copy a LVM logical volume to a loopback file on another system?
So it turned out that the volume I was trying to copy was an old Xen disk image, not just a normally formatted partition. I was able to mount it using losetup as described here: blog.leenix.co.uk/2010/07/…

Nothing in dmesg but there is this in /var/log/messages: Aug 9 16:38:18 target-system kernel: hfs: unable to find HFS+ superblock. Going to try creating the snapshot per answer below.
