comment Start Linux GUI app in a VNC or RDP session for later access
I need to be able to run arbitrary applications, most of which are not web frontends. Examples are chrome, gimp, etc. I have an upstart script that I can use to launch them, but they don't run successfully before the user logs in because they can't open an X session for display. The upstart script needs to somehow launch an X session, launch the application inside it, then disconnect so the user can reattach to the session using RDP or VNC. I've been using xrdp, which works other than the mentioned issue, but I could switch to VNC if that would somehow be better.

And, we do have Cisco equipment. I was trying to avoid playing with VLAN segregation, because that requires involving approval of our corporate networking team. Looks like that's the direction I have to go. Thanks again.

Yeah, Windows only lets you apply filters to the entire server, not to specific scopes. This is a rather silly limitation, and somewhat of an oversight IMO. Looks like it's not possible. Thanks.

A filter lets me allow or deny hosts, but it doesn't let me serve them different PXE information based on their MAC. All I can choose is whether or not to respond to their DHCP request based on their MAC.
