Yes, I assumed that /mnt/local1 is available. I should have explained, that nothing is mounted on /mnt which typically is the case. Creating this directory therefore is part of the setup. I haven't tried using the mounting event, but maybe you are right. The main point of my answer is that it might be better to keep mounts in the fstab file and do stuff like the chmod 1777 or mkir -p in upstart scripts.

works great. you could use md5sum --quiet though to avoid filtering OK files with awk (and thus the localization issues?). By the way: you don't know how to include untracked files within /etc? Like those in /etc/apache2/sites-available for instance?

It should be possible to use a non-RDS instance as stepping stone. Simply spin up an EC2 instance, configure MySQL, add the federated tables from both RDS instances, and you are set.
