I was a ♦ on Ubuntu StackExchange.

More broadly, I'm an Ubuntu and Debian Developer.

I previously attended George Mason University in Fairfax, VA, and am currently at a web startup.

See my Launchpad profile. If you want to hear me blather, I'm also on Twitter.

As a user, you can override SendEnv in ~/.ssh/config.

comment How can I run Debian stable but install some packages from testing?
It works on that version; you have to create the file.

comment Publish a WordPress blog at one URL, do administration on another
That seems to deal primarilly with a secure and a non-secure host on the same URL. Would I need to make many changes to the instructions to adapt them to different hostnames? Also, do you have any thoughts on the plugin it mentions: kerrins.co.uk/blog/admin-ssl

comment Break up a dd image into multiple files
How would I resume the tarring if I had to switch to different computers (removing /dev/sdf1 and reconnecting it to the destination)?

comment System-wide virus scans in Ubuntu?
We'd also have to disable a user's ability to edit their crontab, since a malicious user could just disable the scan.

comment Prompt users to reset their passwords in Ubuntu?
We created them in /etc/passwd for 100 users. All users are given the same password, and the users are told their username and password orally.

hey, your answer worked great, thanks. I just had to add "Address" between "Match" and the IP address. Can you edit it to add that to the directive?

should have clarified, we want something that allows more than one session to run at once. VNC by itself doesn't do that, afaict, right?

comment Is it important to reboot Linux after a kernel update?
It's not that we need to be always-on, but rather that some of our users have open sessions (i.e. IRC) that can be annoying (from the user's perspective) to restart.

comment Which parts to skimp on when buying a server?
We're just going to be hosting a few projects on it, actually. Nothing too "professional", we're a small high school with some bright CS students.

Why would a server need a video card?

we're a school, so "pay for what you use" cloud alternatives doesn't really work due to the way budgeting is conducted. We go before a committee and have to get enough money before-hand to cover all of the year's technology expenses. If we were to go over our budget with Amazon's AWS, we'd be without anything at all.
