This was more or less the problem. The sender wasn't respecting flow control and it turned out that increasing the buffer size when allocating the TCP port solved the problem.

The load is almost perfectly even among the cores, Erlang is really sweet that way, multiprocessing is really painless!

The flow control idea rings true to me, but evidence doesn't seem to support it... I'll see if I can get sudo rights to run ethtool as well.

Well, it actually is TCP we're dealing with, so I guess I should be looking at the code that's doing the measuring to see if it is actually correct...
