RAM is more complicated: not enough is never good, too much for Java and you will have large GC time. You should monitor your vm and gives it just what it need t avoid too long GC, and leave as much RAM as possible for disk cache.

If we have 2 nodes: N1 and N2; the active MAC is foo (N1), and the passive MAC is bar (N2). If N1 fails: N2 takes back the foo MAC and forgets the bar MAC. When N1 will come back, it will have the bar MAC.
