Run mdadm commands for partitions, hdparm is for the whole drive. You should be able to boot with configuration you've mentioned, it's software raid after all, comes at a relatively late stage in boot process, but I cannot give you my word for it.

Have one local server to store latest packets and use it as an apt repository, this will save you bandwidth and time, use your local repository to distribute updates to local servers. Oh, and use aptitude instead of apt-get.

Yes, I can. smartctl -i /dev/sda shows serial number, same for sdb. Not sure if this helps though, as they're covered from above in their hot-swap slots.

The question was "how" ping knows, I think the author is aware that ICMP is being filtered. He probably thinks that filtered means filtering black hole style, with nothing given back and that raised the question about ping "magically" knowing what's the case.
