comment Automatic Updates occurring unintentionally
Can you show us the gpo that is applied to the servers to make them use the WSUS server? Otherwise, verify the only settings applied in it are to associate the server (use the Settings tab in the GPMC to view the summarised resultant policy). If that has only the setting for the wsus server url in it, then explicitly roll-out your desired Windows Update settings to make sure that the servers are set right.

comment Is there a safe way to bypass a non-replicating DC?
Agree with @Mark ... Always go for the graceful dcpromo before doing anything crazy like metadata cleanups. We've had DCs die (dont ask) before and its a PITA.

comment Recommendation for backup plan needed for small business
+1 for taking the simple and obvious route of Windows Server Backup. For such a small client, the current complexity is ridiculous.

comment Where exactly does Outlook keep it's information about already downloaded messages when using POP?
That could be alleviated by moving all emails out of the inbox and into other folders, Then only using the inbox for emails still to be dealt with or ones that are cared about

+1 for the last point - sanity check. Easy to do, and then at least you've got two people with vested interest to fix any problems that occur ;)

I wasn't intending to be patronising, you hadn't explained your conditions fully so was only recommending as I could based on the information. Glad you found the way. Post that as the answer and I'll upvote.

Can you not buy one? Disk is cheap. Losing data or systems because you didn't have a backup is not.

What's wrong with copying to an external drive and having the upload/transfer happen from there? Robocopy could be a candidate for backing up files to a networked computer.

Yeah, I haven't done anything intensive with regards to packet captures on switches or a large amount of hosts, but the few times I've had to pull out Wireshark to do some diagnosis its been difficult with all the broadcast traffic in there. My question was more from a curiousity stand-point on whether NetBIOS is really needed and whether its safe to disable (less is more? :P).

Have you had experience with this being successful in a sizeable organisation? Do you have any suggested methods for testing or scenarios to test before roll-out to all?

@JohnGardeniers I'm of the opinion that if it isn't needed, it shouldn't be on. Plus, there is a lot of noise on the network from broadcast resolutions - sure these packets are tiny, but I just was after some clarity on what others (perhaps in bigger organisations) have done regarding NetBIOS.

@SpacemanSpiff: Yeah definite Active Directory - I must've accidentally deleted the part where I said I had a 2008 forest and domain functionality level.
