Why don't you make caching not on frontend layer (Nginx), but on backend layer (PHP application)?

comment Extracting matches in NGiNX with regex without if block
No, it's not. Try such config: location ~ ^/foobar/(?<somenumbers>\d+) { return 200 "New link will be: somecoolsite.com/$somenumbers.jpeg\n"; default_type text/plain; }

comment Do you need to recompile PHP to use APC?
Which Linux distro is installed on your server? If it's Ubuntu/Debian, you'll have to compile php5-dev package which provides the files from the PHP5 source needed for compiling additional modules.

comment Can't install Imagick for PHP on Debian from source, error says requires 6.2.4 when I have 6.7.7 installed
Another guess: in Debian, binary MagickWand-config is a part of libmagickwand-dev package. Is this package installed in your system?
