comment Can AWS block access from embargoed countries?
This question appears to be off-topic because it is not about a technical problem you face. In the end, it's a political question.

Glad it helped. One more hint though: This sounds like you edited the ldif files containing the cn=config tree directly. Be careful with this and use it only(!!!) if you have lost access due to changes you did and while slapd is stopped to avoid damages to these files. The normal way to modify the configuration is to create appropriate ldif files and feed them to the system via ldapmodify. However, I use this only to create the admin password and use Apache Directory Studio for all subsequent changes afterwards.

Yes, and here it prints the base names.

What I meant was that ./dir1 and ./dir2 will still be listed by this and such chowned. It's not recursive anymore, but still.

Yes, you are right. Anyway, this still includes the base dirs in the output and will chown them.

You have this backward. This will work only on dir1 and dir2. The OP want to work on everything except those two.

Can you add this output to your question, or a part of it?

comment Mysql service refuse to be started
What likely happens there is that the call to tail fails for some reason and therefore, the script doesn't get the path for the mysql data dir and fails to start the daemon, with a misleading error message. What happens if you run find / -type f -name tail (will take a long time!) Do you get more than one line of output? If yes, it might be that your system is compromised, which isn't so unlikely considering that Debian Lenny is EOL for two years now.

What OS are you on? What happens it you edit /etc/init.d/mysql to contain the line which tail and then call service mysql status? Is it the same output as when you issue this command on the shell (e.g. both /usr/bin/tail)?

comment Dedicated server has a range of IPs. Is there any benefit to having more than 1?
Yes, but that's not working with HTTPS without SNI.

The weirdness begins with the invalid option error from tail since -n is very much a correct option. What happens if you call e.g. tail -n 2 /etc/fstab in the terminal?

comment How should I mount a QNAP in a 1200mm deep rack?
If you have such a deep rack, checking the rail length (and availability of extensions/longer ones) becomes part of the purchasing checklist. Checking another model (TS-870OU) just now, QNAP explicitly states on their site that the maximum mounting post depth is 757mm, so I guess you are out of luck.
