That's what I've noticed as well, but that is the original question. Why does it do this, and is there a way around it other than restarting?

It has a fully defined hostname with no wildcards. What are you saying counts as immediately resolvable? At the time of NFS start, or at the time of mount attempt? It is definitely resolvable at the time of mount attempt per the description above.

Yep. The addresses resolve via getent hosts as mentioned above. The connection is link-local, there is no other dns system other than avahi in operation. NFS works after restart, just not before doing so.

Yes, but it's done via host name, hence why mdns is relevant.

Added error. But why would NFS need to be started after Avahi. I would expect that NFS would fail the lookups until Avahi started, but once it had, are you saying I should still expect NFS reverse lookups to fail? as far as I know, I'm not using tcp_wrappers( hosts.deny ).
