comment Puppet: How to skip restart during package upgrade until config is replaced?
@AaronCopley Purging Varnish 3 before installing 4 would probably work, but is hard to do in Puppet in a single run, since both package versions have the same name 'varnish' and would conflict. Usually in Puppet you describe the desired state, instead of the steps to get there. That doesn't work in this case.

I think that will fail on nodes that do not yet have Varnish installed. In that case the config directories don't exist yet, so Puppet cannot manage files inside them.

So a basic netwerk connection appears to work. If you open a telnet connection from various machines to port 25 on exchange.sample.com, can a connection be established? Also, have a look at testconnectivity.microsoft.com, which is an online tool to perform various connectivity-tests.

There are many things that could be wrong. What have you ruled out/tried already?

@XavierLucas That's certainly a good solution. Why don't you enter that as an answer?

comment Download your files from your dedicated server to synology
Hey, I started as a PHP guy too :). Avoid FTP, it's insecure and obsolete. Learning SSH and related tools like rsync is worth your time. Here's a tutorial on rsync: digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/…. Get it working manually first. Then set up a passwordless SSH keypair for authentication. Finally add the rsync command to cron and you're done.

comment The instance created from EBS snapshot fails to launch
@EricHammond We create daily snapshots of multiple volumes on a dozen instances. We rarely need to recover from one. I suppose I thought having so many AMI's would be hell to maintain and clean up. Good idea though. Any suggestions on how to automate such a system?
