After scraping through an engineering degree I spent a lot of my time working for accountants.

I'm currently working for a Helicopter Charter Company where mobile web solutions are really useful.

Most of my current expertise is with Delphi 7 / MySQL / Java / Tomcat with bits of PHP and all kinds of odds and sods.

comment Cannot connect to DB server
When you say you don't have the command line do you mean that you can't access the Windows command line at all? If you can, the mysql command line shell should be somewhere like "C:\Program Files\MySQL[ver]\bin"

comment Tomcat / Railo stop responding with no error output
Don't know anything about Railo, but I'd guess that some resource is running out. All I could suggest is to set up some logging of your own to see if you can start narrowing down what it is trying to do when it stops. See Railo log files getrailo.org/index.cfm/documentation/configuration/…

comment Is MySQL required on both the database server and the webserver? why?
You will need some sort of MySQL client on the Webserver to allow it to connect to the MySQL server

comment Linux RAID mdadm: what does 'Events' mean?
Ah ha! So the .710 is 710 (presumably) low priority events. Many thanks for digging this out. I wonder if there is a list of "events_lo" type events (and indead events_hi) anywhere.

@Kyle thanks, I'll try that when she is away for a few days.

comment Are SSD drives as reliable as mechanical drives (2013)?
My wife's laptop SSD stops working every few months and requires a strange "power on but don't try booting for twenty minutes" fix. Then it's fine again. New technology, new ways of failing.

comment Setting up an Office Network
In my office almost all connections are wired. People (the ones that use laptops) working for extended periods plug into power+large monitor +keyboard+mouse and the network. Our pilots are using mobile phones, tablets or laptops /netbooks for their paperwork in the morning and evening, and they use the wireless.
