I prefer "sudo -s", it's shorter and I think it may do some specific processing to start the shell "properly".

"type -a foo" will show you all programs named foo, and works for all Bourne shells.

comment Is there a point in using Prelink anymore?
I must admit it's been a while since I used gentoo... I have since moved on to OS X :). I remember a test I once did on OS X: start all applications at once and time that (about 1 minute iirc). Then, remove all prelink information and start all apps again. That time it took 5 minutes... This was in 2005 on a tower Mac, a real beast.

Actually, ESXi and ESX are almost the same featurewise. The migration you are talking about requires a VirtualCenter install.

comment Who is a good registrar these days?
While I haven't registered any permanent domains with them, they've offered me fast, free, rock-stable dyndns domains for 5+ years now. From that perspective, highly recommended!

I edited my answer to include the script, above. Not sure if you got a notification for that so I'm just pointing it out.

I'm curious, what is the use case for this? I imagine it's for an in-memory database? Have you considered SSD drives instead?

comment Cheap but Highly Available Shared Storage?
Very interesting! They only have partners in the US though, so it's a no-go for us :( I wonder if VMWare will ever use this approach, every node you add to a VMWare cluster would add clustered storage.

comment Cheap but Highly Available Shared Storage?
Thanks for the explanation and the link! One question, when I look up SATA prices for Lefthand, I get P-2060-1TB07-HD: Spare NSM 2060 1.0TB SATA Drive, $2,380. Is this for 1 drive? Seriously? 1TB SATA drives normally go for 99$...
