comment filesystem for millions of small files
Btrfs looks to have better or comparable results in everything but delete. But, how often do you delete 300k files? I liked rfs in the past, but btrfs might be a better bet for the future.

And it is much easier to "clean/vacuum" a db file than defrag a filesystem on linux. Most/all of the fs don't provide that functionality, saying it isn't necessary. Noting Mihai's comment above though, you can see it isn't strictly true.

This isn't the right answer. The author is asking about text file logging and this answer is about the NT Event log--two different beasts.

comment Which user account should I use for an intranet web-app service?
Another one, had to add "log on as a batch job" so I could run scheduled tasks with it.

Ok, I did go for a specific unprivileged user after all, even though there was a lot of installer work to do. One of the gotchas was adding the "log on as a service" right and removing the "log on interactively" right. I used the command-line program for this called "ntrights" from the 2003 resource kit which can be downloaded at microsoft.com.

Doesn't exist on XP, 2003: msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/…

Good idea, I can allow access by the user and admins only via ACL.

Thanks for the info. If I use an unprivileged account, I suppose I'll need to use its app-data folder instead, correct? I've also created some convenience start menu items to the config file, not yet sure how to tackle those.
