My current tool of choice is Ruby but I've previously wielded the Java hammer for 10years and I've dabbled with C#, Python and Javascript to various extents.

I'm also a photographer and the best of what comes off my cameras can be seen at Hot off the Memory Card.

Actually, I've just checked /.ssh/known_hosts and there was a duplicate key for the server. I removed that and normal ssh root@server is working again. Not entirely sure fi/how/why that was the problem but glad to have ssh access.

Genius! I don't know why it doesn't work by default but specifying the password authentication solved the problem.

This seems like a great suggestion but /etc/hosts.deny doesn't exist and AFAIK the default behaviour is to allow all?

Thanks for the tip! Very useful. I've included the output in the question above as comments aren't formatted.
