Based on the response to this question, and the fact that I've skipped CHKDSK several times and seen no other problems, I think we've narrowed it down to an interaction between Antivirus or Indexing software and the TortoiseProc or TSVNCache processes.

Might well be. I experience the issue via TortoiseSVN and command-line SVN. Also, I have experienced it on small commits and updates as well as larger ones. Funny thing is that often, after hitting this error, I can repeat the exact same operation and that time it will complete without issue.

yes, the service is set to Automatic; my guess was that some security policy might be disallowing the service to automatically start with cached credentials...
