comment Is LSB's init script function “start_daemon” really used for real daemons or should I stick to start-stop-daemon?
@JürgenStrobel: It's clear that LSB is not seen as standard; that's more or less what my answer says! I am afraid i do not agree that it was a stupid idea, though. Standards are good, because they reduce the effort required of software developers like me to make their code portable. The LSB is not a perfect standard, but that makes it a poor implementation of a good idea, not a stupid idea.

comment USABLE multi-master replication for Postgres?
This may be a solution to the fundamental problem you were facing, but it is not an answer to this question.

Did either of the answers actually solve the problem? If so, could you accept whichever one solved it best? I'm also interested in this problem, and it would be a useful pointer as to which to follow up.

Is it that you need to use bash -c to do a redirection?

comment Sharing git repo on DreamHost
There is an old saying amongst the unix folk to the extent that it always always turns out to be a problem of paths and permissions. This is no exception!

Can the other users log in to the server interactively? If so, what do they see if they run git --git-dir ~ME/projects/repo.git describe --all and ls -a ~ME/projects/repo.git/?

comment FreeBSD encryption concept: automatic boot without password or key, when mounted by another system?
He could, in principle, keep the key in some other place, like the nonvolatile memory that goes with the firmware. That would stop anyone being able to mount the disk on another machine, but would still allow walk-up access. It's still not a very good idea, though.

comment how to pipe data to sftp connection?
I thought about using a FIFO for this, but neither SFTP nor SCP will read from a FIFO.

comment Is there a way to tell keepalived to make a health check immediately?
I think that makes keepalived re-read is configuration file. Does that then cause an immediate health check? If it does, it will necessarily be a check of everything, which is not what i was asking for.
