It sounds like you have a solution looking for a problem. Why not try running a RoR app on a box or VM with 512M and see how you get on?

We ended up having to restart them to bump the RAM up. I'll keep an eye on them and compare the slab allocations if their usage patterns start to differ. Thanks!

No mention of setuid()/seteuid() anywhere in the code or strace output. Argh!

Should sending a SIGSEGV make it dump? If so, it doesn't -- kill -11 <PID> == no core file :(
