When you say "from php code", do you mean like php -r or through a web server?

Could be EC2 networking weirdness. Try setting HTTP_HOST to 0.0.0.0, does that help?

comment mysql: unknown option '--skip-innodb'
If the --skip-innodb option isn't recognised, it suggests that the InnoDB plugin isn't loaded. Can you start MySQL without the above option and run the query SHOW ENGINES;?

comment How to increase CPU core speed of a guest to maximum of Citrix Xenserver Host
Also, this could be related - HP servers can be set to balance energy consumption against performance. They're supposed to scale according to demand, but this doesn't always happen properly. What have you got set in the BIOS for this HP machine?

comment Web-based tool for testing FTP/HTTP server performance from various locations
If the speed from the server to speedtest.net shows 100Mbps, and you're confident that your office connection isn't the limiting factor, it could be the software. What FTP package are you running? Can you achieve 100Mbps download from the server to any other site via FTP?

comment This script won't execute on startup, ideas?
Try replacing /usr/bin/sudo /bin/su - $USER -c with /usr/bin/sudo -u $USER. This will run the command as $USER directly.

comment How to properly prevent 504 Gateway Time-out?
You can use max_execution_time in php.ini (or the pool settings if using PHP-FPM) or alternatively try plugging set_time_limit() at the beginning of the script / in the bootstrap.

fastcgi_read_timeout is the interval between two successive read operations so if the response is fed progressively then the timer will reset after each read.

+1 excellent spot! You can see why I was stubborn - it does work here :) 1.0.15 is the newest version of Nginx EPEL offers at the moment, hopefully an update will be coming soon.

comment Right way to configure Nginx filtering with ProxyPass
Thanks for the feedback @VBart. Indulge me - I've posted the exact configuration I was using here. All three options (including the commented out sections) work. I've been tailing the logs, all the requests are correct, can't see any requests for "/dev/null". I'm running Nginx 1.0.15 on CentOS (EPEL).

adding VBart's comments, fair point - same functionally but is confusing
