I have been a principal at Ashdar Partners since 2003, a SQL Server DBA since 1998, a developer since the 1980s and a nerdy computer enthusiast since the 1970s. I've probably used more obsolete computer systems than you have.

comment Sql Server database logs “missing”
What do the secs/read and secs/write numbers look like from performance monitor? Do they spike when you have problems? I would think that 2x500/RAID1 (are they SATA or SAS?) could get overwhelmed pretty quickly, unless you have a super-small amount of updates,

Can he upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit or does that absolutely require a re-install? I don't think that I've seen a Windows sysadmin do an 'in place' upgrade of a server OS for at least ten years.

comment Cannot login by using Server Name but together with instance
Server roles have nothing to do with connection information and requiring an admin-level login is a red flag for bad software. There is an old Dilbert cartoon with the punchline "Our target market is people who are too embarrassed to return the software." If you don't complain nothing ever gets fixed, no one (but you) realizes that there is a problem and the DBA always seems to shoulder the blame for other people's mistakes. Just a friendly warning to the new ("accidental" or not) DBAs out there.

comment Can not create a linked server between SQL Server 2008 on a desktop and my laptop
Can you post the value for "state" that should be part of the 18456 error message? The state value can provide more detail about the exact cause of the problem.

Are you using a Windows account or a SQL Server account?

comment Maintaining SQL Log Files
At this point, if the log hasn't grown and DBCC OPENTRAN() doesn't say that a transaction has been in-flight for days/weeks/months, I'd say that you are left with slowly shrinking the log down to something sane, watching for growth & thinking about backup/restore strategy.

Isn't much point to running 1 tlog backup between full backups, ++ with those diffs. I'd switch to SIMPLE recovery, stop tlog backup and run a diff in it's place (1 full + 6 diffs a week) or leave db in FULL recovery mode, stop all the diffs and run tlog backups more often, anywhere from 1/day to 12/hour, depending on rate of data change & SLA.
