For the hosts file trishtech.com/2013/03/… it basically overides DNS entries. Most of the VPN sollutions have minimal issues with DNS entry replication so by using the host file you basically replace those settings. It's a trial and error process but in @ 15 minutes you should have the result

You could try to limit the application priority with renice / nice or from the start up parameters somewhere where the ntpd is not affected by it , if it's affecting ntpd it might affect other applications also and it's affecting system stability

The synchronization should be made by GIDs and SIDs not actual names so this could work out - the objects can be renamed on the slave server as far as I know
