comment Upgrade PHP5.1.6 to PHP5.3 in CentOS
Thanks, this worked for me where some of the others complained about huge lists of missing dependencies such as libc6 etc.

Did you restart Apache after making the change? How are you testing whether or not it works? Is it appropriate to just edit the PATH variable in the .profile file of the user that runs Apache?

comment Need help configuring Apache, MySQL, PHP on Centos Linux
+1 (in 50 minutes when I have votes again). This is correct. Op needs to add the domain to the hosts file to be able to access it. Or not use a vhost at all and just access http://localhost

comment Apache MPM event in Apache 2.4+
Thanks for the good info. We don't have any problems with prefork but if some performance can be gained with no side effects to the application, I'll try it.

comment ESXi: Allowing a guest OS to use other disk drives in server
Thanks for the response, this sounds exactly like what I am looking for. I'll try it out at work tomorrow and respond back. The 4TB array will probably be used only for storing MySQL data.

I don't have a preference as to whether or not it is formatted as VMFS. If I get additional backup and recovery capability as VMFS then that's great. Currently the RAID 10 is set through the LSI RAID manager. If its easier to not format it as VMFS and set it up some other way, I'm open to that too.

comment How do I optimize MySQL's memory usage?
Agreed, they are pretty small databases too relatively speaking. If you are expecting a ton of database read access, then you may consider some sort of caching system like memcached that your application can use to store values from the database to reduce hits to the database. If you are doing mostly inserts, then disk is going to be a very important factor. To some degree the question depends on what your use cases are. If the data isn't changing much, then the mysql query cache should help out a lot with faster queries too. Also make sure your indexes/primary keys are good.

comment What options do I have, to replace Apache web server?
Yea, you need one thread per connected user so if you have a busy site, expect there to be a lot of httpd processes spawning and dying.
