You really shouldn't waste your time trying to do this task. You should approach you manager and request some education in the tools they are expecting you to use as you desperately need it. Once you are educated, you will understand how important it is to get your whole system up-to-date.

It was implied by ... By default cron will mail any output from the command to the user, I have fixed it to explicitly state that there needs to be output for mail to be generated.
