comment Advice on DL380 G5 RAM, and why the DIMMS I have aren't supported
I found this question that I believe you had input on a year or two ago. I hadn't considered the possibility of a BIOS update, as HP now require a support subscription for BIOS downloads. I had a bit of a moan at them, and they provided me with the update, which I will try. Hopefully it will be a similar issue.

Comparing the HP Part with the Micron part, are they not essentially identical?

Thanks. Being in the UK, it would cost me twice as much to get the HP branded part, as it would for a standard RAM manufacturers part. I can get 16GB as 4x4GB for £19.90, but for the HP stuff, it costs about £17 for only 8GB. The DIMMs share the same specifications, and the ones I had were working. This is only a home lab, so double cost is quite a consideration.

Thanks Aron. Yes 1 and 3 are bank A, 5 and 7 bank B and so on. I tried each DIMM set seperately, but only the two of them worked, the rest showed unsupported DIMMs. I will try again just in case I was going crazy, but pretty sure I will get the same result.

Great thanks, seems pretty straightforward. Will give it a go! Thanks

I did toy with the idea of a VBscript, but is there anyway to specify the credentials to use, as the drive needs to be connected with credentials different to the current users Windows login. Thanks

comment Copy VM folder from ESX 3.0.1 host
Thanks for your reply. Yes the same principle applies to 3.0, and I have enabled SSH server under security profile. The problem is, by default the root user is no granted SSH access, and I have to use a different user account I created. Again, as the VM folders only have read access for root user, my new user account does not have permission to copy files.

Well I was sllightly off the mark, the host is 3.0.2, and the datastore only has a VMFS version, which is VMFS 3.21

comment App not using all cores on VM after migrating host
Yes definitely well over due an upgrade. We are in the process of moving to 5.5 as we speak, but need to keep this running for a while longer. I am almost certain it was using multiple cores previously, although I didn't actively monitor it that often, as there was never a problem. I will give the multiple sockets suggestion a try, and see what happens. I'll also be opening a case with the software vendor for some advice.

comment Are temporary profiles copied from the “Default” profile?
Ok many thanks. Have deployed my file to the Default profile, so tomorrow should yield the results I was hoping for. Appreciate the advice on test setups. Wasn't sure if the evaluation period could be used for this purpose, especially if I have to reinstall repeatedly after the period expires.

Unfortunately we do not have a lab environment. I could setup a quick test on a Hyper-V VM on my PC, but not sure how people feel about unlicensed VMs like that?

Are you asking because you think I should have tried before asking the question? I haven't tried it yet, as I was worried that futzing with the default system profile might have some negative repercussions. Just wanted to confirm the process Windows goes through when creating temporary profiles, and if this is a safe thing to do first.

Will try removing that update and see what happens.

We have tried removing shares and re-adding. Removing and re-adding both NTFS and share permissions. Looking for spurious errors in event viewer. Blocking all GPOs in case there was a policy applied that shouldnt have been. Restarted servers and domain controllers. Flushing DNS caches. Interestingly, it seems to be ok when using the name, but not IP or FQDN. Next thing we will try is removing updates and removing/rejoin to domain.

comment Merge Live VMware hosts into existing vcenter
So once added added to vCenter, I can power off the VM, and use the migrate option to "Change host and Datastore", and move it to a local store on one of the other hosts. Power it up to confirm working, then migrate to the SAN datastore? Sounds simpler than I had feared :D

comment Merge Live VMware hosts into existing vcenter
While the CPU difference would allow adding the host to the vCenter server, I thought I might need to use EVC to ensure that the VM can be powered up on a host with a different CPU. I think that may only apply to a different family though, so as they are the same family CPU, might not affect me.

That's right. I want to free up the standalone server, so I can wipe it, install 5.5, and integrate without new vCenter datacentre.

comment Link server 2012 account picture with active directory
Interestingly, when I look in the users profile, appdata, roaming, microsoft, windows, account pictures, I can see a single image there and it is the image I set as the new display picture. However, on the start menu, it still shows the default image. Not sure why this image isn't being applied.

Thanks for that. Yes I must admit, I had come across many tools that do this. I was hoping for a more integrated solution, but obviously if they are not linked then that isn't really feasible. Out of interest, do you know where the 2012 account image is stored? We use central profile disks, so I would like to think they are stored in the user profile? I need to figure out why they do not persist after a log out.

comment Store scheduled tasks in user profile
Yes it's a tricky one, as half the reason we are heavily investigating in the idea of a farm, is to provide some high availability. Should anything happen to that one server, a farm allows them to continue working as normal.
