comment Best way to clone a Linux system
I guess you have the system on a MTD partition. Is your system able to boot another system from SD card? Then you could simply copy the MTD partition.

I'd remove the feature from the kernel then. Otherwise someone can plug an USB-stick and start swapping to it again.

See DHCP and DNS for examples as primary and secondary services.

comment Default umask for cron jobs
What's the problem with this? In a cron entry you can call any script or binary, and in a script you can source any other file you need to setup the environment.

comment Why must the IP be configured on the bridge device?
A bridge connects 2 or more networks to become one networjk with one IP-address. An IP-address for a single device of the bridge is useless.

On pool.ntp.org/en/use.html they say, that the servers change hourly (unless one fails and is replaced). Can you check that by asking only every hour?

The connection is waiting for an ACK. Can you look at the network traffic with wireshark or tcpdump?

comment Large number of ssh login attempts
The providers from China should have an abuse-contact in their whois-entries, you can complain there (only once, not for every attempt). And for the one from verizon, go and complain at the FBI (also only once).

comment Not getting httpd dump on segfault
Have you tried to run the server with strace (redirecting output to a file)? It will slow it down a lot tho, and the segfault may not happen then.

Try the hints from cyberciti.biz/tips/… - otoh it is more secure to ssh to the host and access mysql from there. For a GUI use phpmyadmin.
