comment assigning write permission to /proc/sys/vm
@Raghava Depends of your version. At least it's in version 2.6.28.10 - that's where I saw it.

comment MySQL without password prompt?
Why was that downvoted? If this a security flaw, it should be fixed in mysql.

comment cron job not running the script that start vncserver
Instead of starting /usr/bin/startvnc from cron, you should start a script that does this, watching that keeps running, then restart it.

comment SWAP reducing SSD write speed?
Your first action should be that you set the swappiness parameter to 0 - i.e. swap only on out-of-memory condition. Furtheron you should avoid swapping to ssd or any other flash device, because wear leveling will reduce the lifetime of your device.

comment Is there a way to restore iptables rules to the ones set after a fresh installation?
You can go to the default state by flushing all rules and set all policies to ACCEPT. Do a iptables-save >ipts and look at the first lines.

Can you add the part where fd 21 is opened, or use strace -fv ... to include PIDs?

comment How to unmount when umount is not available?
I've got it working with this: perl -e 'require "syscall.ph"; $fil = "/media/sdc2"; syscall(&SYS_umount, $fil);'. It's not updating /etc/mtab tho.

My guess is that the fastest way would be a perl one-liner.

comment Suddenly Gmail and Hotmail block our emails
Have you found something in your outgoing mail log? The most obvious way would be sending spam from a script/program from a rootkit tho.

Doesn't every client beyond the router have a private ip address like 192.168.7.52 or is that really something like 92.17.1.22?

Mine is 6.0.7, rather old too. Can you put the output of strace -v ls somedir (the one that doesn't work) to pastebin.com or somwhere else?
