Learn About Me!

I solve problems with Linux and Windows servers, wired and wireless networks, storage of all types, and insert_buzzword(); These days I find myself solving problems using MongoDB, ElasticSearch, and other data stores.

comment forget my old password. how can i recover that
@Zoredache It's also possible for AD passwords to be stored encrypted rather than hashed (GPO option), and if there are old cached credentials on a machine somewhere, you could conceivably find them and crack them. Maybe. If the stars align.

comment mongo shard has high number of faults, but top shows only 8% of memory used by mongod
@AdamC Okay, I've been in a similar situation with a MongoDB instance and it was the Linux host not freeing up cached memory. Something like free && sync && echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches && free fixed it up. Here's more about what that does: unix.stackexchange.com/questions/87908/…

comment WinServer 2012 DC with 2 IPs on one NIC - DNS and other Problems
@Arminius Temporary or not, it's going to screw Active Directory. "I'm just temporarily going to park this dump truck on my head. I'll move it as soon as new parking space frees up." Okay then, enjoy that! :D Here's the process for doing it "right" (which is still awful and sketchy): petri.com/…

Putting two IP addresses on a domain controller is almost universally bad. There's a way to do it, but you didn't do it that way. You're kinda hosed right now. =(

@Stony You won't need to wait because you're not changing records, you're adding records. What's your domain name?

It would help us to know your domain name, but I understand if you can't share it.

comment Name servers not resolved leading to DNS lookup failure
@itechy21 Get a different DNS host. Route53 from Amazon is just dollars per month depending on how many DNS requests you get. Go to your registrar, change the nameservers that your domain points to, and get off of 000webhost.com. If you want free, check out afraid.org but not before you read this: serverfault.com/questions/655349/…
