Hire Me!

As of December 2013, I am looking to depart from my self-owned consultancy and go to work at an exciting, growing business that has truckloads of fun problems to solve.

Learn About Me!

I'm a generalist Systems Administrator. I design and implement systems that rely on Linux and Windows servers, wired and wireless networks, storage of all types, and insert_buzzword(); I like Chef and Ruby, but long walks on the beach get sand in my shoes and that's not okay.

My Gravatar is from Troy Snow's photography. Check him out at his Flickr page and tell him I sent you: http://www.flickr.com/photos/troysnow/ . Even though we tend to use the same goofy kitten face as an avatar, we are not the same person and have no affiliation. Other than good taste in avatars, anyway.

comment Virtualhosts - making available only certain websites without root folder
A development box behind a dynamic IP address managed by D-Link dynamic DNS service. There are so many unprofessional variables at play here that 1) The question is not a good fit for ServerFault, and 2) Even if you manage to get it to work for you, it's a house of cards made of tissue paper just begging to be set on fire and kicked apart.

Once it downloads, it opens very fast for me. Mere seconds. Thanks for putting the actual URL for us to test.

comment Setting up dev environments with big databases
Have you considered separating the database from the Vagrant LAMP stack? Have a separate database server not included in your Vagrant machine. Change the connection strings in the application to point to the external test database. PArt of your rollout procedure would then be to change connection strings to point to the production data sets.

You can put that comment as an answer and then accept it so that future readers are certain that there's an answer to it.

comment How can I set up a single DNS entry to go to multiple endpoints
Just to note, not all DNS servers across the internet honor TTL values, and even the best service that offers this kind of "DNS Failover" (Or as I call it "DNS Fauxover") will still cause downtime for the service.

comment What to do after SBS migration?
@Andy As for not being able to stop a SBS installation and only installing the server, that's just implied in the Microsoft documentation for how to install SBS. I have heard of someone hacking a way to get it done, but that's unreliable and outside of the unsupported way to use the product. The licensing will need to be verified between you and your VAR as handing out strict licensing advice is... legally sketchy.

comment Mysterious Bandwidth Usage
I don't know what you want me to say. #1 There's no "simple" way of interpreting the data, but there are right ways that aren't hard in and of themselves. This is srsbiz. #2 I Googled 'wiretap tcpdump' and found it as the first result. #3 I Googled "nsa 3500 tap mode" and found the SonicOS manual on the first page that has plenty of gritty details about it. I believe you need SonicOS enhanced 5.8+. Also, you might rather use Wire Mode depending on your network topology. Take a look at the differences before doing anything. Bein' in IT ain't simple, yo.

Okay, that could be of use. Add that to the question because in so doing, you'll bump it back up to the top of the question queue and get more eyeballs on it.
