comment Opensource alternative of DynDNS?
Thanks I'll have a look. The project seems quite dead. As far as I can tell the latest code update is about 12 years old.

comment Opensource alternative of DynDNS?
This post simply describes how to setup a DNS server using BIND. Where is the DynDNS-like functionality? Things like automatic updating of the DNS triggered by a clientside script.

comment What is the value of JAVA_HOME for CentOS?
@DanielSerodio Correct. I clearly described "Download and install Java JDK from Oracle", and then it does exist.

Thanks, see the bottom of my question on how I actually did it.

@embobo: I'm using dnsmasq for this setup: What's the best way to check that the DHCP server really does this correctly?

+1 For listing all the options.

In addition: remember that the first specified vhost is used if nothing matches. So be sure you define a sensible fallback vhost first.

+1 Very good point. I'll always keep this in mind.

comment Which VPN that works without an “installed” client
+1 Great suggestion for part of my needs. What they provide is something I can do myself without the need to trust any outsider (like GotoSSH). I'll simply install something like AjaxTerm on one of my systems behind https with basic authentication (very easy to do). This will give me console access to my systems (i.e. so I can punch a small hole in my firewall). This solves the "at a friends house" case. This does not yet solve the "internet cafe" case (they usually have port 22 blocked).

I found that this solution (which works in most cases) has two issues: 1) Some ISPs route traffic differently based on the port number (i.e. when using https you see the IP of the proxy server and when using ssh you see a different IP address ). 2) When on vacation I would like to be able to use the same setup when I'm at an internetcafe (which usually only allow http and https).

TIP: Try logging more information about these requests. Perhaps the request headers contain information useful in tracking down the cause of what you are experiencing.

comment Make a Linux image “unique” after installing it on a new computer
From my experience I recommend installing cobbler for this purpose. Wirks very good with RedHat based distributions (i.e. RH, Fedora, CentOS, ...). fedorahosted.org/cobbler

Regarding the firewall/security: I have a DMZ running at home with "extranet" virtual machines. So I consider that base covered.

comment Setting up a Develop, Acceptance, Production for a single person business
Good point, but given the scale of this business I expect this not to be an issue. What I have in mind is a single machine for both Dev and Acceptance (production is assumed to be external) behind different URLs and the acceptance to be 'hidden' for my wife. Also because she will be limiting to changing templates (i.e. simple PHP changes, HTML, CSS, images, etc.) I assume the resulting PHP code to remain as portable as the original thing we started with.

comment PXE bootable browser
Great suggestion. I booted the ISO in VMware and it looks nice. I tried to boot it over PXE ( I found this vimeo.com/8613977 ) and I get a lot of errors (i.e. it won't boot). Any suggestions?

comment Finding the root cause of 100% iowait in Linux
Nope, no relevant errors. There is only one 'error' in the logs: "kernel: /dev/vmmon[13566]: /dev/rtc enable interrupt failed: -22". To my knowledge this causes timing issues in VMware but nothing like this IO problem.

I've added the output I got from iotop. Given the rather old kernel I cannot extract SMART info from my SATA disks.
