comment How to run SQL Server 2005 and 2008 on the same box?
I recommend you to update the text of the question... If anybody else will read it, chances are that he/she will never go thru all these comments.. Seems that it is not related to SQL Server, rather to router configuration, so I can't help you much, sorry.

ummm... you wrote about "another machine" not "another network". ok, so named pipes will not work for you, and you have only TCP/IP. But, I suggest a good way to isolate your problem - try to disable named pipes, leave only TCP/IP and connect from LOCAL NETWORK but from another computer in the same network. if it works in local network then problem is in only in your router configuration.

I don't understand your question "??? how do i browse from the remote computer ???" - read my comment again. In Login window you select in Server Name combo box <Browse for more...> then there you see a tab "Network servers" and you browse the entire local network for all SQL instances. What is the question?

I do recommend as the first step to switch the entire firewall off temporary and check, is this really a problem with firewall.

From MSDN "When SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005 clients request SQL Server resources, the client network library sends a UDP message to the server using port 1434. SQL Server Browser responds with the TCP/IP port or named pipe of the requested instance. The network library on the client application then completes the connection by sending a request to the server using the port or named pipe of the desired instance." - so, in your case, 1444 and 1434 ports should be opened in firewall...

you write "don't seem to find a way to specify a port number when connecting to named instance via MS SQL Management Studio" you cannot provide it in Studio, because SQL Browser provides such details for clients. Could you in the New Connection -> Login screen select Server Name, <Browse for more...> Can you see both instances in server browser?

I suppose the other authors already answered your question. I just wonder why to install Enterprice on local computer, if Developer Edition has all features of Enterprise and the license cost is significantly lower ?
