comment Why do we ping the IP 4.2.2.2 to test connectivity?
I have never used this address even though I was aware of it. It always seemed like a bad idea to use abuse a public DNS server in this way. I wonder how much bandwidth per day is spend on simply responding to ICMP requests. I have seen this in scripts that run every minute to check that the internet is up.

comment Any non-custom way to manage iptables with fail2ban and libvirt+kvm?
I have yet to find any sanity, and I have been looking for a while. It seems like every tool that anything to do with iptables assumes it will have exclusive control over your rules.

comment Why does eth0 show an IP if I'm booting into runlevel 1?
@Ignacio Vazquez-Abrams: On both Debian/Ubuntu and derivatives Networking is enabled all runlevels. Also they normally operation is done at runlevel 2.

comment Connect through SSH and type in password automatically, without using a public key
What are the technical difficulties with enabling key-based authentication? Perhaps you should be asking that question instead, or in addition to this one.

comment Why does eth0 show an IP if I'm booting into runlevel 1?
Not sure it is true on SUSE, but on other distros networking is started for all run levels. But no server daemons are started. Not sure why you would be getting an address if none was configured and there was no connectivity though.

comment web based open source FTP
I really don't like links directly to executable files. Particularly when the domain name does not clearly suggest that it belongs to a single product. It probably isn't the case here, but I do get worried that what you are linking to is malware.

comment Using pre-made patch cables on a punch down block?
Not sure I see your point Trevor. A punch down block is just a patch panel that is more generic. A small patch panel with RJ45 connections really isn't going to take up any more space then your punch down block. I think this is really a case where you should think of your successor and use a standard patch panel.
