comment Recovering Root Password
If you don't want to setup a secondary method, you may want to make sure you have a good backup system in place, use a journaling filesystem. Then accept there may be a minor data loss and hit the power button. You could minimize this by simply removing any access to the system (pull the network cable) and wait a while and hope everything that needs to be committed to the disk gets committed.

comment Recovering Root Password
If you have locked out the root account, and you blocked use of control-alt-delete to reboot and taken other steps to lock down a system then there may be no possible way to safely reboot the system. If you are going to heavily lock down a system I would suggest you setup a secondary access method like key-based ssh, a second account with sudo privileges or something then do not use this secondary method for day-to-day operations.

comment Slow logins with roaming profiles
I don't have any docs or links but I believe that that the roaming profile is not a sync and instead a full copy at login and logoff. Perhaps someone will be able to confirm that.

comment How difficult is it to setup a mailserver?
You understand that even with your own mail server other people will still be able to read your mail by simply reading the mail from the person who send a message to you, or the mailbox of the person you sent the message to? Your ISP can simply intercept the message as it crosses the their network. Given the how many people use yahoo, gmail, hotmail accounts it is very likely someone will be able to a large majority of your mail even if your mailbox isn't hosted with them. If you are really paranoid try and get your friends to use GPG.

comment Tunneling traffic through two VPN hops/tunnels
The problem here is that host at the data center will not have a route back to the home network so responses to packets from the home network will not be returned. I would be tempted to say you can solve this by setting up NAT/MASQ on the VPN interface for the work->datacenter VPN. I am not sure you will be able to do this though on Windows XP it might partly depend on what type of vpn software you are using..

comment How do I remove a URL from Google without having to have a Google E-mail Account
I don't think he wants google to hit the page in the first place. Setting a meta tag on the page means Google will hit it at least once. A robots.txt seems like a better option.

Is there anything like denyhosts or fail2ban installed? If yes, can you check to make sure that you didn't trigger something to lock yourself out?
