comment Is there a maximum subdomain depth?
wikipedia also mentiones the 127 level limit. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subdomain#Overview regarding webservers and browsers they must be analyzed and tested individually

comment After MSI install, \Windows\Installer DB file name changes
the MSI files in folder C:\Windows\Installer\ are just cached versions of the original MSIs (basically a copy with all the actual files removed, so only reg keys, metadata and maybe custom actions). there is afaik no official documentation about the installer cache and there is nothing to gain playing around with it. btw the iteration problably happens because the file already exists

thanks for the recommendations! but the most tools just scan your PC and check for updates for installed software. i maintain a list/report from a software inventory i need checked. so far software.informer.com looks most promising, i will try that

comment Is it possible to migrate away from ActiveDirectory?
it was probably downvoted becuse its too short and im not so well formated :). the passwords should be an attribute of the user object in the AD. since its ldap based you could use any ldap browser or a script to read it.

comment What are pros and cons of keeping a local administrator account in Windows 7 workstations in a domain?
maybe you can disable the local admin account completely then, if there is a problem you still could activate it using some bootable recovery tool like ntpasswd or CIA/ERD commander. i used local admin accounts quite a few times in my life, usually when the domain is not reachable due to network problems

then your passwords are only as good as the generating algorith, also you would have to hide/protect the generator itself.

comment PSExec “access is denied” on WS '03?
This is a comment and not an answer but my rep is too low to post comments. Can you access admin shares on the target computer? e.g. open \\LOC-Server\admin$ or \\LOC-Server\c$ with a explorer. If that works its not a problem of access rights. Maybe the psexec service is already running on the server and is using a different version (in that case remove it and make sure you are using the most recent one). The service is installed on the first use of psexec.
