comment Can I use ipmitool to determine if an IPMI link is 'up'?
FWIW, we have the same issue when we give power to the computer before plugging in the ipmi network interface. We've only been able to recover by unplugging the server, waiting awhile and plugging it back in :(

comment Is there any sense to repurpose old hdds to maximise lifetime?
If they're powered up, they'll age and die

Also you might want to use sar to monitor io/cpu during the night as well

comment Can OpenVPN invoke DHCP Client?
There isn't anything more universal. I would claim that the majority of folks have the vpn server assign the ips dynamically or use static ips defined for the client.

comment Restoring mysql dumps from incrementals
He did specifically say he had incremental backups, so one would assume he created them with some utility

He could be using Innodb Hot Backup or XtraBackup or other tools to be doing binary incremental backups. Binary logs are not the only way to skin this cat.

comment What's the common practice of when to update a soon expiring SSL certificate?
I can't upvote using nagios or similar to monitor ssl hosts enough. It catches those times you add a new server into the pool and it's not configured correctly for https as well, which seems to be a commonish issue.

comment Does MySQL/InnoDB checksum my data?
It entirely depends on your media. A single sata/ide hard drive doesn't do checksums, so a flipped bit wouldn't be detected. A raid-1 array would detect it, and a three disk raid-1 would be able to repair it. SSDs tend to do checksums to detect when pages start failing due to wear.

You also can use the innochecksum tool to verify any binary backups you make as well. Url: dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/innochecksum.html

comment Server thinks a request is coming from my gateway
Can you diagram the network layout and example IPS? Something akin to 1.2.3.4 -Internet-> 192.168.1.1 -Private-> 192.168.1.5 ?

comment Why is SSHD hanging at “Server accepts key”
Did you give it a few minutes to finish? It could have been your DNS server was down and it was waiting for the reverse DNS to time out

comment No more diskspace on server
the deleted mysqld files are all size 0, so they're not the ones using the disk space.

comment Redirect HTTPS to HTTP
Try that edit. FWIW, my rule is very similar (I use SERVER_NAME rather then HTTP_HOST) and this works just fine.
