comment Building raw disk images: best way to delete files for compression?
Yes, it works, but dd'ing in a dd'ed image is a very slow way to do it. zerofree takes about 10 seconds on my build process.

comment use Amazon EC2 tools in Capistrano to get the servers to push the code
Did you ever come up with a solution to this? I'm not a cap hacker, the best I've done is to write a script to generate the lists of hosts using the API

comment Sun Grid Engine (SGE) Jobs Not Visible After Adding virtual_free
Is there a way to make the jobs show up when I run qstat -f -u * -q someQueue.q? Like a slight modification to the command?

comment Sun Grid Engine (SGE) Jobs Not Visible After Adding virtual_free
That's definitely not the case. qstat -f -u * -q bas.q. The jobs are definitely there, I just can't see them until they are running. If I don't specify a queue, I can see them, but they aren't attached to a queue.

comment Apache, Wildcard SSL and mod_rewrite
That did it. Thanks! $_SERVER['HTTPS'] was not being set in PHP, so I assumed it wasn't being set in Apache as well.

comment What are EC2 Best Practices?
I disagree: use elastic IP's on long running instances. It doesn't cost you anything, instances do crash and it's a huge pain in the butt when you're restoring from backup AND have to update DNS.

comment Guidelines for Mail Servers - How to Maximize Deliverability to Remote Inboxes
I strongly disagree with Avoid HTML and Avoid URLs. These are both reasonable things to put into emails. Avoid URLs that are blacklisted, known phishing, etc.

comment How to keep your physical server environment manageable
In my experience, it's a bad idea to label both ends of the cable with source/destination. In an environment with reasonable change, the labeling tends to get skipped, or worse not updated. Instead, label the cables with unique numbers. That way you don't need to trace -- just match the numbers.

comment Gotchas when building a Beowulf Cluster
Do people even call them 'beowulf' clusters any more? I thought they're just 'clusters' now.
