Most people against the this possibility were saying you will need it and you will be in big trouble if you don't have.
I don't think is a real reason, there is plenty of way to avoid single point of failure of any components, so the criticality of having access to one server in particular become irrelevant.
So if your IT infrastructure was completly redundant and the non-access to one particular server is non-critical and can be adressed by clustering, virtualisation, cloning, fast backup system, etc..
Will you give up the root account ? My experience show than mainly sysadmin have a personal relationship with the root account and have big problem to not hold the password of their own server.
