Automatic switchover is configured in a primary/secondary HDR server setup.

The HDR cluster would be connected and replication is on. If the service is stopped gracefully on the primary server (NODE-A) or the VM is terminated, failover happens and the secondary server (NODE-B) becomes primary.

The following works ok as long as Connection Manager/ICM is up:

service informix stop

or

onmade -yuk

or simply shutdown/terminate the primary DB node (NODE-A)

However, if in the case of a DR event where both the primary DB server (NODE-A) and Connection Manager/ICM went down at the same time, then the Connection Manager machine was brought back up, it does not failover to the secondary node (NODE-B)

On the Informix servers awwdst10a and awwdst10b I have the following replication parameters

  • The behaviour described is not the expected behaviour (not the behaviour I'd expect). I assume that there's no question of simple network timeouts being too long? I wonder if the network address that was used is still faintly responsive because although the VM has crashed (been powered off), but the host OS has not died? Jul 23, 2018 at 3:55
  • DRAUTO 3 means that there should be a connection manager somewhere controlling the failover. Do you have a connection manager configured and it's logs ? Jul 23, 2018 at 7:15
  • Did a connection manager setup with similar settings to what you wrote and it did failover to the secondary. However, it took over 60s from powering off the primary until the promotion of the secondary. Aug 2, 2018 at 20:16

Did a lab setup and I will post some of the settings and logs so you can compare.

I have Informix server ifx_a as the primary on machine1 and Informix server ifx_b as the HDR secondary on machine2.

On the Informix servers ifx_a I have the following replication parameters. HA_ALIAS is equal to the DBSERVERNAME, to keep it simple). Informix server ifx_b parameters are the same, except HA_ALIAS and DBSERVERNAME.

So, there are differences, since it seems you had an AF (Assertion Failure) during the promotion of the secondary.

Could you post more of your logs? From right before pulling down the primary until the secondary gets stuck in recovery.

Primary server assigns "active arbitrator" role to connection manager(CM) as there can be multiple connection managers. If primary server and "active arbitrator" CM gets killed at the same time then after restart, CM cannot promote HDR to primary since as CM isn't assigned the active arbitrator role. Informix do not support auto recovery from multi-point failure. CM needs to be run on a hardware different from primary server hardware.

You need at least one Connection Manager up and running for a failover to happen since the role of the Connection Manager (beside others) is to detect a node failure and do a failover automatically in order to ensure the database high-availibility. If you have only one Connection Manager in front of the database cluster, after shutting it down, automatic failover won't happen so you will have to do

onmode -d make primary force

on secondary server in order to promote it to primary. If you have multiple properly configured connection managers, the failover is assured.
