i dont have any control of the DHCP servers on my network and every 2 weeks or so there is an outage of a few hours where my CentOS 7.8 servers do not get responses to DHCP renewal requests. As far as I know these servers are configured exactly the same. Some of the servers continuously request DHCP during this outage until DHCP renewal is successful and the systems are back on the network. But, some of the servers seem to hit some corner case and stop DHCP requests after some time and then never make it back on the network. Can any one please advise what different is happening when seeing the differences in the logs I'm posting.
server003 is a failure case
server004 is a good case thanks!

some oddities I see is on failed server003
"bound: renewal in 2134686840 seconds"
"Trying recorded lease 192.168.2.72"
192.168.2.72 is a very old network we used to be on is dhclient actually setting this IP on the interface?

Your server003 has remembered an old DHCP lease for an address 192.168.2.72 with a very long expiration time and is falling back to that when the DHCP server is unavailable. This isn't even on the same network as the last legitimate IP address it received 10.20.193.131.

You should clear out that server's DHCP leases and then restart the DHCP client.

Something like this should do (as root) while keeping the network link up:

rm -f /var/lib/NetworkManager/*.lease; killall dhclient; nmcli device reapply enp4s0

  • thank you for this answer. Do you mean it just set 192.168.2.72 on enp4s0 and left it like that for 2 billion seconds? if so can we disable that behavior?! we would like it to ignore any previous leases and just keep trying for a DHCP server every 5 minutes. thanks! – jodlgc Nov 24 '20 at 16:06
  • @jodlgc I couldn't begin to guess why it held on to that lease. Maybe because it appeared to still be valid? – Michael Hampton Nov 24 '20 at 16:48
  • thanks. those commands took the old entry out of the lease file. but oddly our systems stopped requesting DHCP renewal after we ran that command. i dont think that dhclient is restarted with the nmcli device reapply command... needed to systemctl restart NetworkManager for that – jodlgc Nov 25 '20 at 19:28
