I'm renting a VPS where I run a Docker cluster. All the docker data is on a additional volume I rent and attached to the server. The VPS has its own disk space (40GB) but only a small part is used for the host system. 80% is unused.

What would be the best approach to utilize some of the host system disk space (20GB) and the additional volume?

I've been doing some research and came across things like OverlayFS, but somehow I've the feeling that his isn't the right thing for me? How can I limit the quota on the system disk?

Another idea was to create a file system in a file, then add both file systems (on the host system and the additional volume) with LVM together.

What would be a good approach here? I'm on Linux with a recent kernel.
