I have a DL380G6 with p410i controller (windows OS).

HDD Config is:

  1. SAS Array A - 1 logical drive, RAID 5
  2. SAS Array B - 1 logical drive, RAID 1 (2 x 450GB HDD)
  3. SAS Array C - 1 logical drive, RAID 1 (2 x 900GB HDD)

I want to expand the capacity of Arrays B and C and I have 2 spare disks 1.2TB. I want to use these drives for Array C and then replace the 450GB disks with the 900GB that were used in Array C.

first scenario is:

  1. Remove 2nd disk from Array C. Plug in 1 1.2TB disk and let it rebuild. When rebuild is finished I remove the 1st disk and plug in the other 1.2GB disk and again let it rebuild. From ACU I expand the logical drive capacity.
  2. Remove 2nd disk from Array B. Plug in the 900GB disk which was used on Array C and let it rebuild. When finished I remove the 1st disk and plug in the other 900GB that was used on Array C and again let it rebuild. From ACU I expand the logical drive capacity.

In first scenario is it possible to reuse the 900GB for the Array B? Or do I have to somehow "format" the disk before plugging it?

Second scenario is:

  1. Totally delete Array C. Plug in both 1.2TB disks, create new RAID 1 array and use backup to restore files.
  2. Remove 2nd disk from Array B. Plug in the 900GB disk which was used on Array C and let it rebuild. When finished I remove the 1st disk and plug in the other 900GB that was used on Array C and again let it rebuild. From ACU I expand the logical drive capacity.

In second scenario is it possible to reuse the 900GB since they have been deleted from the old Array C? Is there anything else I should take into consideration?

If you have any other ideas feel free to mention them!

Kind regards, Dimitris
